Haxnbauer is a hearty slice of Bavarian tradition nestled in the bustling Tal district of Munich. This German restaurant specializes in classic regional dishes with a focus on hearty meat cuts, most notably their pork and veal knuckles. Visitors come here looking for an authentic experience where the main event is generous portions of perfectly cooked meat – crispy on the outside and tender inside – accompanied by sides like creamy mashed potatoes or fresh salads.

The atmosphere at Haxnbauer leans toward lively and warm, capturing the essence of a traditional German eatery without feeling overly touristy. The space fills up quickly, especially during evenings and weekends, so making a reservation is a smart move. Diners often complement their meal with a well-poured liter of beer, enjoying the casual but attentive service that strikes a careful balance between friendly and efficient. Waitstaff are known to accommodate special preferences, like swapping out sauerkraut for a lighter salad, which adds a flexible, welcoming touch to the dining experience.

While the menu spotlight shines brightest on the Original Munich Veal Knuckle and the Haxen Grilliert, the restaurant also offers dishes like mushroom soup, Bavarian apple strudel, and some lighter options such as South Tyrolean bacon with chive bread or salmon. The portions are sizeable, making it a place best suited for those seeking a filling, traditional meal rather than a light bite.

Locals and travelers who delight in rustic Bavarian cuisine will find Haxnbauer suits gatherings centered on comfort food, conviviality, and indulgence. The rustic interior and the bustling vibe provide a genuine German dining context, making it an excellent stop on a day of exploring Munich’s historic center.

Haxnbauer – A Must-Try in Munich! Absolutely fantastic experience at Haxnbauer! The food is truly amazing — generous portions and incredible flavor in every bite. The pork and veal knuckles were perfectly cooked: crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside, exactly how a proper Bavarian meal should be. The atmosphere is warm and lively, the service is friendly, and the entire experience feels authentically Munich. If you’re looking for delicious traditional dishes and a memorable meal, Haxnbauer is an absolute must. I’ll definitely be back!

Ordered a half crispy pork pig knuckle as the waitress recommended for 1 person! Very good portion paired with 1L beer! They allow to change the mashed potato to other side!Love this flexibility! I had a wonderful and satisfying meal!

Great authentic German pork knuckles and sausages. Note that is not the regular mashed potato, but some springy gooey version which I didn't take to. Place was full and most ordered their pork or venison versions. Had a great (Tiger) Radla lemon-flavoured beer. Do make a reservation.

Read reviews that this place is famous for its pork knuckle dish (Schweinshaxe) and it indeed lives up to its reputation. The meat was tender with a delightfully crispy skin. We also had a really friendly female waitress attending to us and recommending to us dishes. She was also kind enough to accommodate my request to replace the sauerkraut to fresh salad which I greatly appreciate. We had a pleasant time here enjoying good food and great service, highly recommend it!

The whole crispy pork knuckle is such a unique experience. Cooked perfectly, sausages are super flavorful too. I love their sauerkraut too. Excellent service and relaxing atmosphere, we highly recommend.

Had the mix plate with pork and veal. Both were absolutely delicious. Cozy place, does get quite loud though. Staff was friendly even though it was a hectic evening woth loads of people. Prices are a bit high, but still worth a visit to try some Schweinshaxe. You could probably find just as good for half the price in other places though.
